Abstract: | The Nigeria security situation over the years has drawn much concern due to the disturbing and unabated increase in criminality. However, Crimes and drug-related problems are among contemporary security challenges facing Nigeria. The problems manifest more among the youth and in recent times, under-aged children between the ages of 12 and 17. So serious is the problems of crime and drug addiction in contemporary Nigeria that it is a common sight to find children within these age bracket and the youth indulging in vices like drug abuse, armed robbery, drug trafficking, cultism and cybercrimes. This paper examines the origin of these problems and their impact on the society. More importantly it looks at the security implications of these problems. The paper argues that these problems are associated with modernization and the influence of foreign values in our society. The study is hinged on the Rational Choice theory as propounded by Philosopher Adam Smith in the eighteenth century. This theory states that individuals use their self-interests to make choices that will provide them with the greatest benefits. It was however developed by the classical school of criminology through the writings of Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham. The paper ends by giving some suggestions on how the nation can ameliorate the problems. On the methodology, content systematic method was adopted for researching into the review of secondary data which was structured behind the use of the stated specific objective formed to guide the outcome of the inquiry. The finding of the study shows that: illicit drug intake has affected insecurity in Nigeria. Based on the finding, the study recommends among others that; there must be established norms to fight or target market where drugs are peddles or openly sales for end users- it bring about a decline in the consumption of the substance thereby reducing demand. Secondly, adequate funding and proper training of security Operatives- This means that adequate training either yearly or quarterly should be considered and remain permanent for the training of the security operatives in having access to proper and modern knowledge of carrying out their jobs. More so, constant orientation and education of the Nigerian youths- The Nigerian youths need to be properly trained and orientates on the negative consequences associated with illicit drug use without medical expert prescription. |
