| Abstract: |
Poverty remains one of the most pressing developmental challenges in Nigeria, affecting a large portion of the population and undermining progress toward achieving sustainable development goals. This is why the Guardian newspaper embarked on a campaign, pointing it out and asking both the Government of the day and Nigerians to play some roles that are geared towards combating poverty in the country. This study therefore, sets out to investigate the frequency at which Awka South residents are exposed to the campaign and the extent at which they comply with it using the descriptive survey research design. This allowed for the distribution of valid and reliable copies of structured questionnaire to the 383 residents that took part in the study. The number of residents that participated was determined using Meyer's sample size determination table while they were selected using purposive sampling technique. The responses gathered from the respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics, particularly frequency tables and simple percentages. The study's findings indicated, among others, that the residents often comply with the campaign. In light of the findings, it was recommended, among others, that the Federal Government should actively adopt, support and promote poverty eradication initiatives in the country in order to put the country on the path of massive human development and reduce the weaponisation of poverty. |
